IGP Schutzhund Training

IGP, aka, Schutzhund used to be primarily a breed suitability test for the German Shepherd Dog from people like Max von Stephanitz, the Father of the German Shepherd Dog.

IGP has changed into a sport for all working dogs like German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Malinois, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Giant Schnauzers, etc.

IGP is like a TOP! Tracking, Obedience, and Protection. The Protection is very controlled aggression and drive shaping accomplishes the preparation for Trials in both Obedience and Protection.

Pre-requisites

Not all dogs are suitable to train for IGP and just because you own a German Shepherd Dog or Malinois doesn’t mean it is an ideal candidate. Many Show Line Dogs fall short of the drive and temerity needed to run courageously down the field to attack a charging man, aka Helper.

It can take months or years but first, you need the right dog! Most people involved in the sport are well aware of this fact. We start most of our top Schutzhund/IGP handlers in the Puppy Foundation Program at 10 weeks of age. (I start my own puppy in the whelping box and their first tracks at 5 weeks of age.) Whether it is Canine Cadré or someone else, call us first before you make a decision to purchase a dog and then know what you are getting involved with.

Let us help you decide which type of appointment you need.

A free evaluation is a 15-30 minute appointment where we meet you and your dog and structure a program to meet your goals.

A consultation is an in depth meeting that can take 1 to 2 hours to gather the behavioral sight picture. This is not a free service and is typically designed to assist handlers with more serious or aggressive situations.
